Welcome to our website! San Diego Shotokan, Encinitas is a member dojo (martial arts training facility) of Shotokan Karate of America. Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), a non-profit educational organization, was founded in 1956 by Tsutomu Oshima, a student of Gichin Funakoshi. The mission of SKA is to teach Karate as a martial art to the public during regularly scheduled classes in affiliated dojos and universities throughout the United States and abroad. Over the past 50 years, we have grown to one of the world's largest and most respected martial arts organizations with over 100 member dojos in the United States, and affiliate organizations and international dojos in 17 countries on four continents.

San Diego Shotokan, Encinitas is integrated into the San Dieguito Adult Education program at the San Dieguito Academy High School. We welcome all adults, and minor's 13 and older when accompanied by parent, to join and study karate with us. Prior karate or martial arts experience is not required.

Practice times:
Tue, Thu: 6:30pm - 8:00pm, Sun: 10:00am - 12:00pm

We practice in the dance room of the San Dieguito Academy Gym in Encinitas, California. The dance room is located behind the bleachers. Sunday practices take place outdoors on the lawn area in front of the gym (Encinitas).
Our practices are open to the public. Feel free to watch us during class. All our members will be happy to answer any questions you may have after practice.

Note that SKA members with current dues are entitled to practice at any SKA affiliated dojo in the world.

Come Ready to Move!
No special gear is required for practice. Wear comfortable, light-weight, loose-fitting clothing, or a gi, if you have one. We practice barefoot and the practices are intense. Instruction is provided, just be ready to move!

Our SKA black belts have been awarded their ranks directly by Ohshima Sensei.
Everyone who trains with us is encouraged to participate in Kyu tests, which are offered twice each year (in April and November). All Kyu ranks awarded by San Diego Shotokan, Encinitas are recognized by SKA. Dan tests are organized directly by SKA as part of Special Trainings or milestone SKA events (for example Godan test at the SKA Fifty Year Anniversary Celebration in 2006).
